Keeping electrical safety in check

Keeping electrical safety in check

A higher degree of electrical safety…

26th September 2024

The autumn sees thousands of students making their way up to university for the first time or returning for their next year, and electrical safety is potentially not at the top of their agenda.

So with new surroundings to get used to and lots of gadgets and appliances requiring power, it’s useful to consider some simple measures that will help to keep their accommodation safe for everyone.

According to annual statistics, faulty electrical appliances are the second largest root of accidental house fires across the UK, and with students usually being deposited in their accommodation with a range of appliances, university and college living is no different. Whether it’s a kettle, a toaster or an air-fryer, it’s crucial to stick to brands that have met the relevant safety standards and to ensure that they’re purchased from a reputable retailer. With all the expenses incurred in university courses, it’s tempting to cut corners and save money, but it really is a false economy, especially as it’s also potentially placing all the students at risk. Not only that, there are inevitably bargains to be had in the second-hand market, so if this is the preferred option, it’s important to ensure that they’ve been well cared for and don’t have any form of electrical fault.

Undertaking PAT testing can help landlords and student accommodation providers to verify that all appliances are fit for purpose and safe to use. In addition, it can highlight other issues such as wear and tear, counterfeits or products that may have been subjected to a recall notice. If you’re moving into privately rented accommodation there’s actually no legal responsibility for the landlord to have carried out regular PAT testing, although they do have a responsibility to keep their tenants safe.

In terms of the electrical installation, landlords are legally responsible to have a fixed wire test carried out every five years. Every landlord should be able to give a copy of the Electrical Installation Condition Report (or EICR) to any new tenant. And for students staying in campus accommodation – whether it’s managed by the university or a third party management company – it’s worth checking that the university or college has checked all the equipment they provide.

Other considerations for students to bear in mind, especially if they’re living away from home for the first time, include:

  • If possible, always buy authentic replacement phone and laptop chargers. Even those that appear to have passed all necessary safety requirements might be liable to overheating and catching fire, especially if left unattended for long periods
  • Never charge a mobile, tablet or laptop overnight, in particular in bed or worst of all under your pillow
  • Don’t overload sockets or extension leads as these can quickly become too hot and represent a potential fire hazard
  • Avoid covering plugs and sockets by ensuring that they have good airflow to prevent overheating
  • Never cover a lamp or electric heater with clothes, even if you’re keen to dry them quickly
