Keeping electrical safety in check

Campaign for electrical safety

10th April 2018

As a business committed to electrical safety, we’re delighted to see Electrical Safety First campaigning for the government to take action to reduce the number of electrical fires throughout the year. The bare statistics are alarming in that nearly 2,500 deaths and injuries were caused by electrical fires in the last 12 months, compared to 591 caused by gas fires. In England alone, a total of 17,743 fires were caused by electricity in the last year, and were attributable to misused appliances, electrical distribution faults and the poor regulation of electrical safety checks, particularly in the private rented sector. White goods, including dishwashers, tumble dryers, and fridge freezers are among the leading causes of electrical fires, and in England they caused a total of 1,873 fires, or more than five fires every single day.

As Mark Smith, owner of MS Electrical Services, observes, the campaign can make a real difference to people’s lives. ‘At MS Electrical we’re always looking to help everyone stay safe, so we’re fully behind the Electrical Safety First campaign and petition. We’d encourage everyone to sign up so they can take the case for tighter regulation, more regular compulsory checks and a reduction in the number of fires directly attributable to an electrical source to the very top. It’s a little-known fact that dangerous or faulty electrics in privately rented homes result in more deaths and injuries than those caused by both gas and carbon monoxide poisoning.’

MS Electrical Services offer PAT testing and fixed wire testing in Cambridge, so please contact us to request a no-obligation quotation. You can sign the Electrical Safety First petition here.

Testimonials

The MS Electrical engineer was fantastic whilst testing the 288 items here at Christ Church Cambridge. He was friendly, kind and nothing was too much for him – he was super patient with us when we kept realising there were more things that needed testing around our buildings. Thank you for the speedy and efficient service!
