Keeping electrical safety in check

Home safe home

14th May 2021

It’s a common misconception that fixed wire testing is only relevant to commercial premises and rental properties. In fact, it’s recommended that all homeowners have a fixed wire test carried out on their property every ten years.

As with most things, electrical installations can deteriorate over time, and this applies as much to domestic settings as to commercial buildings. So to safeguard everyone in the household, as well as friends and family, visitors and tradespeople carrying out work in your home, it’s important to have testing and inspection done on a regular basis. Fixed wire testing will provide an insight into your home’s electrical safety and will also highlight any issues that need to be rectified. Ultimately, this gives you – the homeowner – peace of mind that there are no undetected faults that may cause injury or even death.

A domestic fixed wire test will examine all the wiring in your home and will include an in-depth visual inspection and electrical test on all systems in the property. Every circuit is inspected for visible damage or signs of ageing or wear and tear, and the wiring is then tested to ensure that it is safe and correctly installed.

For Mark Smith, owner of MS Electrical Services, it’s important that homeowners understand the need to have their electrical installation tested to ensure that their home is as safe as it can be. ‘Business owners are likely to be aware of the need for PAT testing and fixed wire testing to be carried out in their commercial premises, but we are also seeking to spread the word that a regular fixed wire test on your domestic property is also good practice as it can be a life-saver,’ says Mark. ‘Commissioning a fixed wire test every ten years is the best way to keep your family safe as it will pick up any issues caused by general usage and will provide a checklist of what needs to be put right. When we carry out a domestic fixed wire test we are very conscious of keeping disruption of the family home to a minimum, and we provide a comprehensive report of our findings so that any problems can be resolved.’

MS Electrical Services offer fixed wire testing for domestic properties in Cambridge, so please contact us to request a no-obligation quotation.
