New Year’s Electrical Safety Resolutions

6th January 2025

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions there’s a tendency to set goals that are either unrealistic or can’t be measured. So, this year, why not plan to observe some simple electrical safety tips in your workplace to ensure that everyone can use your premises with confidence?

Our top five electrical safety New Year’s resolutions are as follows:

  1. I shall not overload my sockets – it’s tempting to try to maximise the sockets you have available, but this can be dangerous and can potentially lead to an electrical fire. It’s far better to engage a qualified electrician to add extra sockets in areas where there’s a high demand
  2. I shall not rely on extension leads – while these can be a useful short-term solution, if you feel one is needed then there’s usually a case for adding more sockets. It’s especially dangerous to daisy chain extension leads, and this should be avoided at all costs
  3. I shall switch off lights and electrical equipment overnight – in larger premises it can be tricky to know whether you’re the last to leave and therefore to leave lights and equipment on for colleagues’ convenience. We’d recommend having a system or rota in place to ensure that everything that can be switched off overnight is indeed turned off. Not only will it save on your utility bills, it’ll make your premises safer
  4. I shall ensure our PAT testing is up-to-date – we recommend having your PAT testing carried out annually to ensure that all your appliances are operating correctly and showing no signs of wear and tear
  5. I shall keep our fixed wire testing current – we also recommend regular fixed wire testing to ensure that your installation is safe, and this may also be a stipulation from your insurer, so we recommend checking your documentation and booking a test if it’s due

We believe that adhering to these simple New Year’s resolutions will help you keep your employees, visitors and suppliers safe, and thereby ensure a happy new year for everyone.
