Keeping electrical safety in check

Safety first this Christmas

6th December 2017

At MS Electrical Services we love everything about Christmas, and we’re as keen as anyone to ensure that we all enjoy a peaceful, and above all safe, Christmas. As our attention turns to dusting down our boxes of decorations and lights, we thought it’d be helpful to share some safety tips for the festive period, especially as around 20% of Christmas tree fires can be attributed to a heat source being too close to the tree itself:

  1. If you’re buying a ‘real’ tree, choose one that’s fresh rather than dry.
  2. Check that the trunk has sap as that’s a sign of moisture.
  3. Ensure the tree has regular access to water to stop it drying out.
  4. Make sure the tree is sturdy enough to prevent it toppling over.
  5. Avoid overloading the tree with lights and, in turn, overloading the socket or extension lead you’re using.
  6. Run all leads along the skirting to prevent a tripping hazard, and never run them under a rug or carpet.
  7. Keep the tree away from a heat source such as a fireplace, candle and even a TV.
  8. Use low energy, safe lighting that’s undergone safety testing, and don’t use lights with a damaged or frayed cord.
  9. Switch the lights off overnight and when you’re out.
  10. Dispose of the tree promptly – a dying, dry tree can present a fire hazard.

We’ve spoken about ‘real’ trees so far, but most of these tips also apply to artificial trees too.
