Keeping electrical safety in check

Should I do my PAT testing myself?

27th February 2025

With the costs of running a business continuing to rise, it can be tempting to bring as much as you can in-house to save budget.

One area where it’s possible to reduce expenditure is by doing regular PAT testing yourself, but as Mark Smith, owner of MS Electrical, explains, this can prove to be a false economy:

“Having spent many years within electrical safety testing, I’m adamant that when it comes to PAT testing, a specialist company such as ourselves should be used. Not only do we have all the necessary City & Guilds qualifications, we also have certified equipment and a thorough understanding of all current safety regulations.

“This allows us to make an accurate assessment of the electrical safety of your appliances. In doing this we can minimise the risk of electrical accidents by identifying any potential faults that might be missed by someone who hasn’t undergone the proper training, especially if you’re operating in a high-risk environment.

“We also help you remain compliant with all relevant regulatory requirements and we protect your staff, customers, suppliers and property from electrical hazards. You’ll also never miss a test date as we send out reminders in advance, well ahead of the renewal date.

“And if you’re a landlord, knowing that your rental estate has been given a clean bill of health from a PAT testing perspective provides peace of mind not only for yourself but also for your tenants.”

In summary, the key reasons to use a specialist PAT testing company such as MS Electrical include:

  • City & Guilds qualifications & expert knowledge plus experience
  • Correct equipment and calibration
  • Compliance with regulations
  • Thorough testing regime

At MS Electrical we specialise in fixed wire testing and PAT testing in Cambridge, so please contact us for advice or to request a no-obligation quotation.
